Dress Distribution

The Full Story

How it Started?

Dress Distribution is the very first project initiated by Vijaya Agamani Foundation. In the early days, the founding members distributed new clothes to street children during Durga Puja. Along with street children, physically challenged and elderly people also benefitted from this initiative. Initially, the project began in different parts of North Kolkata at midnight, and later expanded to rural areas of West Bengal such as Keshiary, Dantan, Narayangarh, Bajitpur, Hingalganj, Kumrimari, and many more.

How We Prepare?

Preparation for the Dress Distribution project begins three months before Durga Puja. During this time, our representatives identify the areas to be covered, schedule distribution dates, and conduct surveys in different parts of Kolkata to assess how many children could benefit. Based on the survey, we finalize the required dress sizes and place orders. Once the orders are received, we schedule packing sessions where clothes are sorted according to the phases of distribution. Meanwhile, our technical team promotes the initiative on social media and the website to encourage participation, donations, and support. The actual distribution is usually scheduled on weekends in the month preceding Durga Puja.

How it Goes?

On the project day, all volunteers gather at our office. Project leads brief the volunteers on their tasks before loading the sorted clothes into vehicles. The team then travels to the identified locations, where assigned volunteers gather children from the area. Dress sizes are checked, and clothes are distributed accordingly, ensuring each child receives a suitable outfit.

Why We Chose Dress Distribution as Our Frontline Project?

Globally, over 153 million children are reported to be orphans, many of whom have dropped out of school. In India, around 4% of the youth population is orphaned, a figure that worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In such conditions, providing basic necessities like food and clothing is essential for their development.

  1. Boosting Children’s Self-Esteem
Receiving new clothes significantly uplifts children’s confidence and self-worth, especially in orphanages that often lack resources to provide for all.

  2. Protection Against Climate Extremes
With climate change intensifying, clothing becomes crucial in shielding vulnerable children from harsh weather conditions.

  3. Reducing Pressure on Orphanages
Since most orphanages run on limited donations, clothing contributions ease their burden and ensure more children are cared for.

Conclusion

Vijaya Agamani Foundation organizes meaningful dress distribution events in Kolkata, spreading joy and hope among street children during Durga Puja. Beyond Kolkata, the initiative has also reached rural areas of West Midnapore, East Barddhaman, and North 24 Parganas. With the spirit of the festive season, the project strives to bring smiles, dignity, and inclusivity to underprivileged children, ensuring they too can celebrate the festival with happiness and pride.
